The F4U Corsair was the hero of the Pacific. The signature bent wing design was initially construed as a compromise to accommodate the big engine, a big propeller to maximize the engine output, and short Carrier Capable landing gear. The bent wing solved all the problems and as an unknown biproduct, it actually increased capable airspeed. The Corsair was primarly assigned to the Marines in the Pacific, most noteworthy of which was Colonel Pappy Boyington's Black Sheep Squadron. |
